Want to try peanuts
Hi all, I'm new here, but have been following the SFG stuff for the past couple of years. I put out staples every year but like trying a few new things each year. This year it's peanuts.
Anyone ever try peanuts? I plan to dig down and mix some a lot sand in with the garden dirt. How many should I plant per square foot and how deep do peanuts go? Thanks for any info you all may have.

Re: Want to try peanuts
Have never grown peanuts myself, but have gleaned them from the commercial truck farm after the harvesters have been through. I think it would be a fun crop to try. Here's a few articles that might get you started, but I have no idea how to translate these to SFG:

Re: Want to try peanuts
I grew 4 squares of peanuts last year in my SFG, it was the first time anyone in my family had tried to grow peanuts, they grew really good in Mel's mix.
Here is a picture of last years SFG, the peanuts are in the front 4 squares.
And here is a picture of one square at harvest time, I cant remember for sure how many seeds I planted, but maybe 4-6 per square

Re: Want to try peanuts
We found peanuts at the greenhouse and bought a 4 pack, but I wasn't brave enough to plant them in our SFG. We put them in a deep barrel of Mel's mix, so we'll see if we get any peanuts!
Re: Want to try peanuts
Josh has the magic touch.
I planted 20 seeds and only got one plant and 13 peanuts.

Do you remember what kind you planted, Josh? I think ours are spanish.
On a side note, congratulations on winning the contest! Your garden is awesome!

Want to try peanuts
Josh, I know this is a dumb question, but do you plant the whole peanut (shell and all) or just the nut? I have seen peanuts growing and have gleaned from a picked field but never planted them. Peanuts and potatoes are on my list to try next year and I was really happy to see that you have had such success.

Re: Want to try peanuts
I feed the squirrels peanuts, and they do the planting for me! We've come to a happy compromise-I feed them in the front yard, and they stay out of my veggies in the backyard. I find peanut plants growing in my lawn and flower beds. I always pull them up because I have a shorter growing season.
Yes, shell the peanuts before planting.

I want to plant peanuts
Thanks. I really love squirrels. Unfortunately, I don't have any to help plant peanuts for me. But now I know I can just buy the bag of raw peanuts at the grocery store. Cool

Peanuts
I would love to grow peanuts! I hadn't thought of that before. I would need critter cages for sure then because squirrels are abundant around here. (and rabbits, birds, a gopher, and I even saw a ground hog the other day. I really hope it was just passing through. They're cute but I hear that they destroy gardens.) Actually, because of all those critters I'll have to put my gardens up off the ground - but nothing but a critter cage will keep away squirrels.

Peanuts too!
I'm trying peanuts too! I started them indoors and had problems with them germinating. I have 1 that seemed to take off, but I'm holding off on putting them in my SFG until it's nice and warm outside (I'm in NY). I'll let you know how it works out!

Re: Want to try peanuts
Thanks for all the info folks. I have peanuts sprouting through the ground this morning. I took post hole diggers and dug down a foot or so and mixed some sand into the garden mix. I planted them into 5 one foot plots and all of them have sprouts now. I'll let you guys know how they do. Thanks again.
