Today I planted my Potato Onions, some Garlic, and a few Asparagus crowns. I bought the asparagus form Gurney's when it was on sale. I only planted 4 of the 30 I got! What do I do with the rest of them? I don't have room in the bed they are in for anymore. And I'm all out of MM. Is there any way to keep them until spring?

They should be planted. Are you planning on making another bed with MM in the spring? Is there anywhere else in the yard you can plunk them in for the winter?

I could go buy more compost and what not for more MM. But it's getting COLD here! I don't like to be out in the cold weather. I have a 4x4 to put them in.

Oh I understand about the chill. I am in zone 5a too and as I sit here in my garden drinking my coffee in my jammies and flip flops, sweater and winter hat it's 34°F. Brrrr... I am not going to be out here long.

I have a bunch of plants that I am putting into a 'nursery bed', the place I put plants until I can figure out what I really want to do with them. The plants can winter over in the nursery bed and can be replanted to a permanent location in the spring.
You can either put the crowns right in the ground as a temporary measure or go ahead and make the new bed and get edible asparagus in the spring and not worry about them again for several years.

That being said, I'm going inside, my feet are cold. Very Happy

camprn, I'm curious about your 'nursery bed'. Can you please tell us more? Where is it? Is it in a protected location?

I'm curious too! Can I put them in the real dirt? I have a big pile of dirt from digging out a really old raised flower bed. The boys like to play on it but I bet I could keep them off of it until spring.

No expert here but I'd say stick them in the soil and let it fly! Worst case scenario is, they die. If you don't, they probably will anyway.

i concur with megan.

just stick them in something 'dirtlike'. Smile you might be surprised at the results.

congrats on getting so much planted for fall. i really didn't get anything in the ground this fall - life got in the way, so i'm a bit envious right now.
