My SFG progress
Today the weather was nice and cool so I decided to put the mix in my boxes. I even started laying my grid, but then I realized I was doing it all wrong. Too late...I nailed it in place...oh well my DH will have to improvise. Anyways, take a look...
First we turned over the existing soil to dig up the few weeds that have sprouted.
Next, we laid down and watered cardboard boxes to suffocate out the weeds.
We followed that with several layers of newspaper...which we also soaked with water.
After that we placed my boxes on top and filled them with the blend...
I watered after placing in each bag of the mix, but its still going to need more.
So excited that it is all coming together, I began putting on the grid a bit prematurely...oops
Until tomorrow....

Re: My SFG progress
No, not yet. My DH is sick today, came home early from work, in fact, and has been in bed every since. I made him my cure all homemade chicken noodle soup which is why I got such a late start today. He is going to secure it with blocks around each side. But after putting in the mix, its not budging. I tried...

LOL I dunno I think he might be more of a helper than my 1 yo who decided to book it and start grabbing handfuls of mix from the pea pot nearly uprooting the just peeking out seedlings when I literally turned my back. HE looks like he is trying, or at least he was helping for those 2 minutes before declaring himself "bored" like my kiddos tend to do when the outcome is not very immediate.

Re: My SFG progress
If the rain could give us a break tomorrow, I am expecting a delivery of compost to complete my mix and set up six 4x4 boxes in the afternoon. My "helper" is 16 and off school for spring break, so I am definitely hoping for a bit more help than "cuteness" from him for sure! Wish me luck!

Wouldn't you know it, almost immediately after I snapped the pic he says, "mommy, I'm going to go ride my bike for a while, ok?" And off he went without a care in the world...I love my kids so much sometimes I think my heart will burst.

Re: My SFG progress
I managed to get the rest of the grid together and I put the rebar supports in the ground. My DH is going to help me weave the netting onto the trellis and put my composter together. Prayerfully tomorrow everything will come together and I can start putting my transplants and seeds in the ground!!!!!

Re: My SFG progress
Thanks Jazzy!!! I didn't want to wait for my DH to help me with the trellis, so he gave the twins a bath and put them to bed. I got the trellis done all by myself and it looks amazing. We are about to put my composter together now. I will have pics to share tomorrow!!!!

The garden is looking so good. Glad you were able to handle the trellis yourself. Feels Good, doesn't it?

Buttaflie, You certainly have done a great job and should reap the benefits of all you families hard work in no time at all.
I find kids always are keen to help when water is around but as soon as it's turned off, off they go.
You said above that you had planted the rebar ready in the ground. Maybe it would be a good idea to have a look at this thread I put on here a while ago Rebar Rods
Oh and by the way give your DH a drink from me for all his hard work.

Wonderful job Buttaflie! That is amazing. Wait until your garden starts growing and you get to eat your first carrots or radishes. There is nothing quite like it.
