Tomato pruning and .....?
Is there a right way to prune a tomato plant? And are the pruning's useful for any type of compost? i.e. put them back in the box from whence they came?
I know tomato's want certain minerals but can't remember what and forgot where I read it.
Thanks.

hey garden-noob.
You should not compost tomato leaves or plants. , nor cucumber plants or squash plants.
they can carry a fungus or disease that will spread into your compost pile and then
you will distribute it into your grow beds and end up with an awful mess later on.
I did not read all of the topic that Camprn gave a link to. But it should put you on the right road.
Never fear asking questions. Someone is always here to help you.
I personally find search and google very helpful but sometimes I would much rather communicate with other people---

Amendment for tomatoes
If you get your Mel's Mix right the first time you shouldn't need to add anything extra to your tomatoes except maybe a side dressing of compost if they have been producing really heavily all summer. However, I didn't get a good mix the first time and my tomatoes weren't doing well at all until I sprinkled bone meal in the box for phosphorus and added some fish emulsion for nitrogen. (Too much nitrogen makes them put on too much foliage, but mine weren't growing and were turning yellow and needed it.)

Re: Tomato pruning and .....?
FYI , I add any healthy squash or tomato plant parts that I have pruned to my compost pile. I do not add any that have obvious signs of disease.
Re: Tomato pruning and .....?
My mom swears by crushed eggshells placed in the hole when planting tomatoes, the calcium prevents blossom end rot. I agree after this year forgetting it on a single tomato plant & that was the only one that got BER. As soon as I added calcium it resolved.
