Hi y'all.

Just wanted to share on of my absolute favorite soup recipes. It really isn’t a SFG geared recipe...but it's one of the best soups I have ever had and I just wanted to share with my friends.

Black Bean Soup
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 garlic clove
1-2 tbs oil
2 15 1/2 ox cans of black beans, undrained
1 cup water
1 chx bouillon cube
1/2 cup diced, cooked, smoked ham
1/2 cup diced carrots
1 dash (or more) cayenne pepper
1-2 drops (or more) Tabasco sauce
sour cream

Sauté onion and garlic in oil in saucepan.
Puree one can of beans.
Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker, except sour cream.
Cover
Cook on low 6-8 hours.
Add a dollop of sour cream to each individual bowl before serving.

That is the recipe as written.

This is what I do to modify it.
I don't measure the onion; I just use the largest one in the pantry.
I use 3 large cloves of garlic.
I use olive oil.
I use chx base not bullion.
I do the "or more" cayenne and Tabasco option.
I just skip the sour cream, have never even tried it.

I hope someone enjoys this soup as much as we do. This is one of the few meals I can cook and no one complains. Smile

Enjoy! BIG hug

PS It goes really well with melty cheese sandwiches. (Grilled Cheese)

That sounds wonderful, Jennie! I can't wait to make black bean soup with my own black beans.... I'm just waiting for it to get cold enough that I can truly enjoy it. (Plus, I haven't shucked all the beans yet.... not sure I have enough for one batch, oh well!)

I tend to use more garlic, usually no ham (but sometimes chicken from the chicken stock), and kale. Not tried the Tabasco, that sounds yummy!

Sounds like a SFG recipe to me, garlic, onions and carrots are grown in many of our gardens. Melty cheese sandwiches sound great too.
Thanks for the recipe, my DH loves bean soup of any kind.

Wow, Jennie, this looks so good!

I'm going to make this for us and our daughter. So, I'll leave out the ham and use our Mesquite infused Olive Oil for that smokey flavor and use Vegetarian "Chicken" Base. Now, it will be Vegetarian friendly. The Cheesy Sandwiches with it sounds perfect.

Thanks so much for this!

Well, I grow onion, garlic, carrots and black beans (althoug I am out of them) so this is definitely an SFG recipe. It looks great. My adjustment would be less tabasco and definitely the sour cream! And I wonder where the extra calories come from....

Looks great!

Middlemamma Jennie, a storm front came early yesterday afternoon, so I fixed this recipe and it is now in my repertoire. (sp?) for nasty, rainey, fall and winter days. DH loved it. I did have to substitute bulk sausage for the ham as I was out of ham.
Used my last few onions and carrots from the garden.
Served with cornbread muffins with frozen corn and shredded sharp cheddar cheese in the muffins.
What a great meal. Thank you. thanks
BTW Chopper, the amount of cayenne and hot sauce in this recipe does not produce a spicey soup. We actually had to add more Cholula Hot Sauce to get a little bite in the flavor.

Mmmm sausage was good I bet! I am so glad you liked it... Smile

I love soup and sandwiches and not necessarily together. They are just 2 of my favorite foods.

Black Bean Soup great on a rainy day like today! Empty Soup

Post  ander217 Sun Oct 24, 2010 7:03 pm

This sounds like a good recipe, Jennie. Thanks for sharing.

I made veggie soup this week and included okra, greens, potatoes, green beans, horticulture beans, tomatoes, onions, and a jalapeno from our garden.

My jalapenoes have been hotter than usual this year. I split the jalapeno in half and scooped out the seeds and membrane with a spoon. When the soup was nearly done I wanted to check the seasoning and without thinking I grabbed the same spoon I'd used for the jalapeno. I quickly dipped the spoon in the soup and put it in my mouth. Ye-e-o-w-w! The left side of my mouth was on fire, as well as the back of my throat.

I don't think I'll be doing that again.

Poor Ander, there is not much that really helps for a hot pepper burn like that except maybe a glass of milk.

My husband was trying really hard not to laugh but he knows a good joke when he sees one. jocolor

(What was even dumber was that at first I thought that one single jalapeno had made the entire pot of soup that hot. It took me a minute to figure out it was just the spoon. Duh.)

Oh my gosh Ander, don't feel bad. A few weeks back I made hot pepper onion garlic jelly...and well you know how recipes often have that warning at the bottom about wearing gloves if you are going to be handeling a lot of hot peppers? Well yea...I decided that was OPTIONAL.

My freaking hands were ON FIRE for hours..CampRN gave me a little home remedy that took it down a few notches, but it was horrible!

Like you...I will not be doing THAT again!
