If this is true, I am really concerned... Empty I didn't research long...

Post  middlemamma 10/11/2010, 8:34 pm

But in a few minutes I found this article
http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/organic.asp
that circulated in 2009 with similar info.

And then I found this in Mother Earth News...
http://www.motherearthnews.com/happy-homesteader/food-safety-modernization-act.aspx

To be honest a lot of money is made off of the word "ORGANIC" I don't know how much basis this has.

BUT again....I didnt research more than 5 minutes.

I deleted my first post which called it horse hooey, more or less.

I just found this:
http://laughterandliberty.com/senate-bill-s510-explained-sort-of/

I still think that so many businesses currently rely upon the home gardener that they simply can't shut it down.

This bill was in committee a while and there is a lot of legislation that congress would like to pass before the elections. If you are against this, or any other bill call, write or email your Representative or Senator. Remember, Democracy is not a spectator sport.

Last action by committee on this bill was 9/29/10

I will try to dig up some more solid info.

This has been going around now for several months on various "scare-tactic" websites. The actual bill is a bear to read (been there, done that), but here's a link to a fairly good summary. Judge for yourself:

http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s111-510&tab=summary

Also, here's what Snopes has to say about it's predecessor that is about the same thing:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/business/organic.asp

Growing your own food is not, nor will be illegal. Just ask Mrs. Obama who planted a vegetable garden at the White House. Food safety is a concern, and although I don't agree with this bill, it is merely an attempt to make the food supply safe. I honestly don't think the government can or should try to regulate every aspect of our lives. OK -- getting down off my soapbox now.

Thanks from me too... but I can see where it could create a hardship for the small grower that just trades at small farmers markets and stands. Monsanto has concerned me for quite some time now..I think it would be wise to keep an eye out for this kind of thing, altho wherever big corporations and big lobbies are concerned, I'm not sure we little people can have much say..

This bill scares me to death. Yeah Camprn !!!, democracy is NOT a spectator sport. Please. please, please contact your Senator, (this is a senate bill). CALL their offices, every time a citizen calls on a specific issue, the issue, and caller are counted. These numbers put the issues in their faces adn helps them decide where to spend their energies, (if they want to be re-elected)
For more information on Monsanto, see the film: "Life according to Monsanto" (Have an airsick bag handy)

In Texas a few years ago the "powers that be" passed a law stating all poultry had to registered and inspected, whether for sale or not. The bill further read that no one would be able to sell poultry without a license, and of course the license cost $$. Since at that time I raised chickens, guineas, and ducks, I called the appropriate agency and was sent forms. My poultry operation had to be inspected by another agency, so I called them. Turns out there was a two year backlog in inspections, so I got on a list. I filled out the registration papers as it only involved a small fee. Three years went by with no inspection (I called twice).

I've never heard of the bill again and folks are back to selling at farmers markets with no licenses. I guess the bill is still on the books, but since none of us could get inspected, it was impossible to comply with the new rules.

My point in this is, yes by all means, contact your congresspeople (I have), but also don't panic. The mechanism of enforcing any licenses on a small scale will be bulky, and I doubt will ever come around even if the bill passes (it didn't the first time out in 2009). I don't think the intention of this bill is to put small individual growers out of business -- it's just the government doesn't always look at the end picture.

Looks like the US and Can. govts. are all the same.

I get so very tired of governments passing laws that they can not enforce to protect us from ourselves. There are seat belt laws, helmet laws for motorcycles, bikes and now possibly skiing, laws against clotheslines, Laws against using a wood burning chiminae in your back yard, laws against having your thong show above the top of your jeans, laws against getting a bikini wax (and I am not making these up). I have tried so hard to give up my life of crime and "go straight" but then some morning I wake up and through the stroke of a pen somewhere in our city or province or nation, I am now guilty of breaking another law. I guess I am just a criminal at heart.

I hope they wake up and see what a waste of time and money this is. Realistically , I really don't see how they could enforce something like that. What's next ? not being able to cook in your own kitchen? it really sounds very unrealistic to me.

I wonder what Mel thinks about this , and if he has had address this issue anywhere.

It seems that concerns related to this bill have been debunked several times over, and in these outside sources there is a lot of scare-mongering going on. In the meantime, I don't think we are getting anywhere by continuing this discussion.

From our TOS:
https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/how-to-f33/how-to-help-keep-this-forum-at-its-best-t1240.htm
3. We have an off-topic forum for conversations that aren't SFG specific. However, as with most forums, we ask that the topics of politics, religion, and others that invariably lead to heated arguments, not be discussed.

Thread is locked.
