Pea trellising

I have one box that has a three square width. I was going to do three squares of peas across the width of the box.

Question: is one trellis enough or do I need three or... In my notes I show 9 peas plants per square. So each square would have three rows of three seeds. Each pea plant will need a trellis. My little cramped mind can't move any father than that.

For this first box I was going to plant "Alaska" which says it only gets 2.5' tall, but later I will be doing some sugar snaps and perhaps others.

Here's a different trellis concept that might give you some ideas. This is a 1x4 box that I planted 9 days ago, hoping for a fall harvest. There's more than 9 per square. The box is on the north side of the trellis; as the plants grow taller they start leaning towards the sun and laying on the trellis. The plants farthest away just grab on to the other plants. The pole peas will grow past the trellis peak, and gravity begins pulling them down the other side. No more peas 8 feet off the ground!

I was very satisfied with my pea trellis this year. I planted Sugar Ann snap peas, bush type, 15 per square, 4 squares in a row. I put up one trellis pole 5 foot high. on either side of the trellis I tacked down some recycled moulding strips to the box. Then I threaded twine over the top of the trellis, under the moulding, over the top of trellis, under the other strip of moulding. etc.

It seemed like not enough string, but the reality was the plants supported each other between the stringing.Plenty of support yet I could still see through the plants to harvest easily. Pea trellising Jul_0118

Very nice and it solves the problem of having more than one PVC trellis per 12 inches. Thanks boffer and camprn!
