Pond slime good for something! Who knew?

I have a pond, and I've been throwing away good stuff! Oh, how silly I feel.

Especially in the spring, when a pond grows lots of stringy algae.

My pond contractor came to clean my pond, and said, "Don't throw away that gunk, slime, and scum. It makes excellent compost. Put it on any vegetable that requires a high-nitrogen diet. Spinach, chard, lettuce -- mine are fantastic!"

Since my chard last Fall was not impressive, you can bet I'll be skimming off the scum and putting it on my plants! I hardly have any fish at all (just tiny mosquito fish), but the fact that fish inhabit the pond is another natural reason for the fertilizer effect.

More and more, I'm impressed with what a pond can offer for the eco-system in your back yard. I've decided that, wherever I live from now on, I'm going to have a pond. Very Happy

I love ponds!

I don't have one ATM as we live next to a 9 acre dam but whenever I clean out my fish tank I always use the water on my plants. They seem to love it! Pond slime good for something! Who knew? Icon_biggrin

I am delighted to hear that you like ponds. I'm always interested in seeing pictures of ponds if you have any.

Pretty soon, I'm going to visit a pond at my old workplace, and snap some photos of it. I'm always in need of inspiration!

Hi cherriesjubilee,

2 houses ago my hubby & I had a lovely pond we built on a raised rock garden bed.

We planted small palour palms around the base & had a large tree fern on either side.

We kept a handful of guppies in there to keep any mossies under control.

Unfortunatly, this was before we owned a digital camera, so I have photos but not electronic ones.

I might have a go tonight at posting a photo of our house sitting above our 9 acre pond....

I couldn't find the photo I was after, but you can see my 'pond' in the background behind my SFG.

I love how at night time when I check my garden, there are heaps of tiny frogs sitting in the wire squares of my pea's trellis. Hopefully they fill their bellies with any bugs they can find.

Water of any kind brings life to the garden.

Well, that's good to know. I dont' have a pond, but my water barrel is all gooped-up on the inside...some greenish slime starting to coat the whole thing. So, I'm hoping that theory holds for water barrels as well?????
