I put a few fresh grape leaves in the bottom of the jar to ensure that everything in the jar stays crisp. Works well with pickled peppers and cukes.

Pickling Lime (calcium chloride) can also be used.

Pickles 2023
I planted some pickles late summer (? August? September?). The garden is putting out just enough to use for some fridge pickles.
This time around I wasn't willing to pay the astounding price for fresh dill, so instead am using dried & powdered dill leaves. By astounding, I mean I could buy a couple jars of dill pickles for the price of the fresh herbs.
If you're wondering, "Why didn't you grow dill?" ... well I did. And then my foraging daughter pulled up an entire plant.
And if you're thinking, "I didn't know Mark had a four year old!" Well, yeah, I didn't either. And to think she graduated from an agricultural college.
So, the pickles aren't quite as dilly as last year's batch. I've just been reminded that they sell pickling packets at the stores, so maybe that's the ticket.

Haven't we all been there?
