what does a "good" bulb look like?
I have some rhubarb crowns, asparagus bare roots, and lily of the valley bulbs. I got them about a month ago. but they seem very light for their size and I dont see any green growth? How do you know if they are viable? Ginny

A little confused - you say they seem very light, which implies they have not been planted, but you say you don't see any green growth, which would imply they have been planted by not sprouted. Are these crowns planted? It is after they are planted they break dormancy and begin to sprout.

when my garlic bulbs get light that means they have dried out. Squeeze them to make sure they are not dried out.

Rhubarb crowns and asparagus roots are normally shipped while dormant, and need to be planted as soon as the ground can be worked. Once they are planted the roots start developing and then the shoots start appearing from the crowns. Both of these benefit from a high organic soil mixture with lots of composted manure. And, 40 years later we're still harvesting from them.....
