No "genius" ideas here, just some suggestions to consider; I rely on what I have one hand whenever possible - doesn't give much uniformity, but is effective.
Gutter guard, the squirrels aren't eating, they are just foraging - simple barrier that they choose not to work around.
Chicken wire; got to love chicken wire.
Hardware cloth; good use of otherwise useless scraps.

Just Zip Ties. The frame is 3/4" PVC, drilled holes in it to receive the 1/2" PEX arches, bridged it with 3/4" PVC Zip-Tied to the arches. The chicken wire is Zip-Tied to the whole caboodle and helps reinforce it all. Jon
