How many rosemary plants per square? packet says 18 inches apart, 24-36 inches tall. I don't expect mine to get that tall, since I've got a short season and a late start with them!

Rosemary around here is a perennial that can really get quite large -- one a friend has is 6' across and 5' high. Mine are about 3' wide. If rosemary dies back in your locale, then you might do one per square or one per two squares. Perhaps plant something short lived (like lettuce or radishes) in the adjacent squares in case the rosemary goes wild?

WOW, belfrybat. Mine get 8-10" wide at most, though when I lived in California I saw some that were 2-3 feet wide. I had no idea they could get that big, though! I just love rosemary.

Rosemary per square? Empty Re: Rosemary per square?

At my last house I planted two either side of the sidewalk, and after three years had to remove them as they grew across the sidewalk and were touching each other. Unfortunately I lost them both as they don't like to be transplanted when they get that large. The one I have now is a trailing kind that is about 3' across and 2' high. Here's a pic I found of one (not mine):

For as big as they get in one season, one per square should be plenty. And that is plenty to dry and save and easily be a year's supply of the herb. Possibly more.

Once you observe it for the season and how much you use personally, you will know better. I started rosemary from scratch here in CA and they grow very big ultimately, but not super fast.
