I've been thinking a lot about critter barriers and pest protection. Sooooooo...
How about show and tell? Show us what you did or do...whether it's a jar of soapy water to an elaborate fence or anything in between... and then tell us a bit about it.

Plastic Cup Protection From Beasties!
Somebody here posted the plastic cup idea for protecting direct-sow seedlings from rolly pollies and slugs. (I can't remember who it was, so will the author please step up and receive credit for this crop-saving idea.) Cut out the bottom and sink it about halfway, then plant seeds inside the protection of the cup. It works like a dream and I even recycle the cups, so it's a dirt-cheap solution to an aggravating problem. Here are my Daikon radish sprouts. (2 previous crops planted in the same area were devoured by slugs and rollies.) This is an old picture. They are now about 6" high. I removed the cups yesterday to use on the parsnips.

I believe that was me CN but I got the idea from somewhere else. I use the cups to protect seedlings from cutworms.countrynaturals wrote:Somebody here posted the plastic cup idea for protecting direct-sow seedlings from rolly pollies and slugs. I thought that was you, TD, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Thank you again. I can't tell you how much disappointment you saved me with that little gem.trolleydriver wrote:I believe that was me CN but I got the idea from somewhere else. I need that, TD. Do you store it for the winter? If so, how?

Re: October Avatar: Don't Fence Me In
CC, I just leave the cages on the beds over the winter. They sometimes "cave in" a bit but it's easy to straighten them out in the Spring. My first cage is made from 18 inch wide chicken wire and I found that it really is not high enough. The one in the photo is made from 24 inch and is much better.CapeCoddess wrote:I need that, TD. Re: October Avatar: Don't Fence Me In
Are we going with this one again or something new for this year?
Re: October Avatar: Don't Fence Me In
I would prefer something closer to Fall Gardening. Let's see if TD chimes in. He has been taking care of the Banner headlines.
