Can anyone help to identify this ???
Ok. I fill my 5 gallon bucket with tap water to use when there is not enough rain. I let it sit at least 12 hours, but usually longer than that. Routinely, after pulling out cupfulls, when I get to the bottom of the bucket, I see these flakes, which almost resemble tiny pieces of aluminum foil. Does anyone know what this could be? I obviously try not to get them in the watering cup, but am wondering what they are and if they could be harmful to my plants. I appreciate any feedback.

Looks like vermiculite from here, from the bottom of your watering cup maybe? Did you pull out a pc and look at it close up?

Yes. It's white and kind of shiny . I don't have a close up pick though. I will get some samples the next time I get to the bottom of a bucket. Vermiculite would make sense though. If some flakes of it are getting blown out of my bed and into the bucket, which sits about 4 feet away. That would be great if that were it.CapeCoddess wrote:Looks like vermiculite from here, from the bottom of your watering cup maybe? Did you pull out a pc and look at it close?

If you aren't getting the same materials out of the faucets in the house, or other outside hose bibbs, then it is probably from the beds. ??

Good idea. I will try the other faucets.sanderson wrote:If you aren't getting the same materials out of the faucets in the house, or other outside hose bibbs, then it is probably from the beds. ??

Vermiculite. It blows all over the place. Your extension agency could get it analyzed. Is it hard or crushable like vermiculite?

Thanks for all your responses. It appears that whatever it is , (i'm assuming its very thin pieces of vermiculite) is blowing into the bucket out of the bed. I placed my bucket in a different location, away from the bed and i'm not seeing the flakes anymore.
