Re: Things You Never Knew Existed Until SFG...
List would be too long. I went from 0 garden knowledge to SFG. So umm... to name a few...
Peat moss
Vermiculite for garden use (knew about it for insulation)
Garlic scapes
Daikon radishes
Trellising tomatoes (knew about staking and cages)
Winter squash vs summer squash
Cabbage worms / butterflies
Mulching
Drip irrigation
Topping peppers
How many plants grow and look. (Broccoli especially)
How fast spring goes to summer in my area

Ditto on all of the above but I'll add lay-me-down tomato planting method.

Water.
Too much water.
Not enough water.
Water at the wrong time.
Water, humidity and powdery mildew
Watering and slugs
Water repelling peat moss.
Water... if it doesn't fall from the sky regular wow, it's hard.

We have all come a long way, haven't we?
I had to laugh at No_Such_Reality's post on WATER. Can we ever get it right?

All of the above, plus real compost and the role of microbes. I should add, winter squash are summer crops.

Re: Things You Never Knew Existed Until SFG...
Never knew about a good mixture for soil.
In recent past. I lived in an apartment. I have plants indoors. The potting soil I buy at the stores is awful. Cactus mix? Got to be joking. Stuff reminds me more of mortar, than soil.
Will be using the soil mix in everything from now on.

Everything was new to me since I never grew veggies before 2010. Still learning good insects and bad. Still learning diseases.
