I'd say it's taking "minimalistic" to the extreme! But hey, when that's all you've got... But looking at all the flowers on my cuke and zucchini plants, I'm looking forward to baskets full of veggies soon.

hammock gal wrote:The only things ready to eat in my garden are from the window box. I've got parsley, cilantro, Genovese basil and lime basil. Now, if only I had something to go with them. I know, patience. Patience.
I hear you. My basil, lemon basil and cilantro are all I have currently available to harvest.
Perhaps some green onions as well.

Mmmm, fresh figs.
Herbs are delish, use them with some eggs for b-fast!

Really? Already? Ours are still a couple of weeks out, but looks like a bumper crop this year.Scorpio Rising wrote:Mmmm, fresh figs.
Watched Sully last night. They talked about "basil tunafish," which we had never heard of, so I picked some and Hubby fixed it. Pretty good.

CN, I can't grow them, they just sound so wonderful! Newbeone has figs!countrynaturals wrote:Really? Already? Ours are still a couple of weeks out, but looks like a bumper crop this year.Scorpio Rising wrote:Mmmm, fresh figs.

They are absolutely awesome. They're also idiot-proof. All we do is water and they take care of themselves.Scorpio Rising wrote:CN, I can't grow them, they just sound so wonderful! Here, in a much colder climate, growing figs is quite a production. I remember my wonderful Italian landlord showing me how he put his fig "to bed" for the winter. He would dig a trench next to it, lay it down into the trench, cover it with a blanket and pile the dirt back on top of it til the next spring. A lot of work, but oh, was it worth it! I had never had a fresh fig until I tasted the ones he grew...amazing!

Is that how we have to do it? Crud! I'll never get a fresh fig off my plant. No way will I do that. I won't even dolly it into the garage.

Basil tunafish sounds good. We have an area in Fresno called Fig Garden. Guess why! It was so sad, to me, to see the orchards removed year after year, for development.countrynaturals wrote:Really? That is so sad!!! They were productive trees?
Nobody around here does that. Our farmers are pretty old school, and hold fast. I don't want to say NOBODY, but I have never seen it.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Roasted curry veggies. From the garden: various tomatoes, last of the bush Blue Lake beans, 2 Japanese Millionaire eggplant and 2 Lilac bell peppers. The rest from Farmers' Market or store: carrots, cabbage, garlic, onion, spices and olive oil.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Snacked on sugar snaps and Daikon pods while thinning carrots and weeding. Ate a thinned carrot or 2 too! Picked 2 green peppers (couldn't wait for them to turn red!). Friends coming over later for a swim and BBQ.
