For those who need a gauge, I would tend to go with the digital readout as Landarch shows.  as opposed to the dial reads.
Mechanical thermometers only last a while in the elements before either breaking down or going out of calibration.
Thermometers purchased in stores cannot be calibrated.
Digital readouts use a thermocouple ( two dissimilar metals ) creating mili amps signals that are always accurate.
At least until the electronics go haywire.

Thanks Landarch for the link to that DIY compost thermometer.

I have ordered 3 digital refrigerator thermometers from a seller on Ebay. The total cost is around $5 Canadian with free shipping from Hong Kong. Downside is uncertain delivery time ... anywhere from August 31 to October 7!!!  Looking forward to making my own compost thermometer.
