Hello from Newport, RI
Hi Everyone!
I'm not just new to SFG, but to veggie gardening in general. We had a garden growing up but I wasn't terribly involved. Now that I *finally* own my own house, I'm diving in with a 4' x 8' garden on my 1/4 acre little piece of land. A friend of mine is really into SFG and recommended that I try it out.
Wish me luck!

Congrats on the house... We'll give you all the help we can.
We love pictures...
If you haven't picked up a copy of the All New SFG, 2nd Edition, you can probably find it at the library. We also have a terrific archives section here that has all SORTS of great info!

Re: Hello from Newport, RI
I got a copy of the 2nd addition yesterday at the library to tide me over until my copy arrives from Amazon.
How did you figure out an accurate LFD and FFD? I live within 1/2 mile of water on three sides. I know that our weather is very different from the north end of town and much different from the top of Aquidneck island.

You can plug your zip code into an online calculator. Here's one:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/freeze-frost-dates/
Or ask your extension office.
They should know best.

One way to get accurate LFD FFD is to take observations for about twenty years.
Or ask a local gardener of long standing in your location.

Re: Hello from Newport, RI
Welcome Aboard, MDunlap, from Ohio! And congratulations on your house and yard! Yay! Sounds like you are off to a great start, BTW. As people have said, post often, read your book, use the search box here in the upper left hand corner for threads about your questions, issues, etc.
And take notes, lots of them; what works, what didn't, what you liked to eat, what you had too much of, you get the drift! Also, when you do things is helpful....
And pictures! We love 'em!

Welcome to the forum. My son lives in Newport and has been a SFG for several years. He is the one that got me started in SFG. I know he has troubles with mildew and other things I can't remember. Cape Coddess should be really helpful.
