Hello from Fort Wayne Indiana.
I have been checking this forum on and off for several months as I have recently "inherited" a square foot garden from my ex and I know very little about maintenance and planting them.
I know, terrible timing as the season is over.
However I want to be prepared for next years planting. I will hopefully be participating and asking a lot of questions!
I need to figure out how to upload pictures as well.
Thanks.

South Face, Welcome to the Forum from California! If you inherited a real SFG, then all you need to do is make or locate good compost to replenish the boxes in the spring and every time you replant. Yes, photos are encouraged so I hope this link helps. We are here to help you on your journey.

Welcome South Face. Please do post photos. As for me, I've probably created a new record for the number of photos I have posted since joining the forum.

Hey South Face, Welcome from Ohio! Not far from you, actually, maybe an hour or so west of me? Yes, things winding down here now, but good planning time, and it sounds like you need a little lead time to understand what you have inherited!
You have come to the right place, lots of experience and enthusiasm here, post pictures, they are really helpful to see what you are doing or working with. Plus just fun!
Again, aboard!

One thing that will really help you understand SFG is to read Mel Bartholomew's book All New Square Foot Gardening.

Re: Hello from Fort Wayne Indiana.
Season is never over, if your able to, plant rye grain or other cover crops that take cold weather, it's great to have something green and growing in winter even if snow covered.South Face wrote:I have been checking this forum on and off for several months as I have recently "inherited" a square foot garden from my ex and I know very little about maintenance and planting them.

Re: Hello from Fort Wayne Indiana.
I agree with Jimmy! There are plenty of over-wintering crops. Some will sit around and do nothing interesting all winter, but come spring they'll start producing very early for you. Others will actually keep growing right through winter.
If you're interested, you'll probably be looking at leafy greens and some of the root vegetables. My friend had tremendous success growing fava beans through winter.
And if you put some hoops over your bed and cover them with cloth, you can often grow things quicker and better still, right through winter.
