Finally, after blooming in April, our first home grown bananas are turning yellow and harvested. One was fully ripe and it was sweet and delicious!

As they go ripe faster than we can eat them, I'll peel and freeze some to use in my daily green smoothies. Very Happy

WOW! Nice, dstack, question, is it true that the cultivated grocery variety bananas are in danger and will be on a decline? I read something about the major banana cultivar being in danger?

Had to read up on this. Wild bananas have seeds which allows for genetic diversity = survival. Modern bananas are sterile, reproduced from cuttings (??) and therefore are genetically identical. They are susceptible the evolving pests and diseases and have to be sprayed frequently. If modern varieties are wiped out, the wild banana stock is necessary to re-create modern bananas all over again.

Dstack, congrats on successfully getting edible fruits. bananas 3170584802

Husband just said he heard something about a disease that is a threat to one of our modern bananas. The last time it happened was around 1965. This is the best he can remember the article he read on the internet in the last few days.

Nice looking bunch!  We used to grow bananas, but they were a wild version and could be kind of tart.

There's a fantastic book on bananas on Amazon that gets into the single type of banana that is extensively commercially grown all over the world.  It is getting hit hard by a disease, and the crop is in great danger.
