Best companion plant

What is the best overall companion plant
I picked up some seeds for marigolds and nasatorium (I read somewhere that the color of the nast matters is that correct)
Is there a better plant I could be using

Check out the thread about using marigolds as companion plants. They may not be as good for that as everyone thinks.

They only seem to help deter nematodes and white flies, and they can actually act as a herbicide to beans. (Which may explain why my pole beans did so poorly last year - I set a marigold plant next to each one thinking they would deter bean beetles. Some of the beans died, and the others didn't produce well.) Also, unless you get the single-blossom types, bees cannot pick up their pollen.

I still plant them because I think they're pretty, but I no longer count on them to deter pests. I switched to a small, single-blossom variety this year with edible petals which have a lemon-flavor.

I use catnip and onions for companion planting, and of course basil with the tomatoes.

Thanks for the info on not planting them near the beans
I had some onions growing but something just flattened most of the sprouts I had and I am not sure if it is not too late to put new ones out. I might drop some near the other plants and just let them go to seed

My idea was to plant them around the edge of the boxes,
