How to rotate your vegetable crops! IMPORTANT: TURN ON ANNOTATIONS!!! in HD Empty Another probably dumb question

Post  Razed Bed 5/7/2015, 10:17 am

In a 4x4 square, would it be acceptable to rotate the Mel's Mix rather than the crops?  I ask this because we have only a small space that is protected from the extreme heat, and all our greens need to go there.  Anywhere else, and the greens bolt in the oppressive heat.

This is what I do each year.  I remove the mix in that 4X4 and send it to the compost and then put fresh MM in that square.

Interesting Google app.

RazedBed, One thing about SFG is that rotation is not as important as it is in row gardening. (p. 144 - ANSFG 1st Edition, p. 157 2nd Edition) Some folks have dedicated squares or boxes for certain veggies. We bring the nutrients (compost) to the plants each time we plant. I have to plant certain veggies in their same boxes or containers because of sun and trellising restraints. No need to replace MM.

Be careful with that, it is not just because of nutrients that we rotate.  Rotation can be crucial for diseases not building up.

I have a box that only grows greens and that does pretty well with only some compost to renew it.  If I saw any sign of something ill happening I would change the soil or solarize it for a season.

Every climate probably has particular plants that need watching out for but tomatoes and its relatives are probably the ones we all think of first and most that need rotation to keep you out of trouble in future years.

To elaborate as per SFG.  If you plant all your boxes in such a way that no 2 squares are the same planting that touch, and you put something different in a square each time you replant you are doing rotation the SFG way.  A dedicated box to one planting is not the same no matter if the plants are on an SFG grid in MM etc.

The video seems to be doing SFG square organization using a whole bed as a square.  Basically Very Happy
