Landscape gardens in the SW Desert

I have a question for any SW desert dweller.

Why don't gardeners use compost when planting shrubs and trees? I know gravel/rocks are used as ground cover or mulch in Las Vegas. Toss some fertilizer in the hole in the alkaline dirt, stick the plant in and cover with rocks.

Is compost really, really hard to find (unless you are a SFGner Very Happy

My yard is rock, but around my pants or trees I use compost and mulch around the base. Most of my trees are in a basin full of mulch and compost, this allows me to fill the basin with water so it will water slowly and deeper. For my trees not in a basin, I usually will slow drip with my hose over night whenever it needs it. It is important to have a bit of mulch around the base to keep the ground more moist. The dry air here leeches water from everything! Plus it breaks down and improves the dirt and provides nutrients for the plants.
