10 day forecast is almost perfect. No triple digits. Nights in the 50s and 60s. YEE-HAH! No rain, but we don't expect any in June. Sad It is a nice surprise when it happens, however. Smile

Looks like nice, normal temps for the next 10 days. I am tempted to open up the sun shades that I just got up. Shocked

Hubby has been going down the mountain to get wood chips for our mulching.  He's brought home 24 cu yds and my job is to spread it since he's disabled at the moment.  The cooler weather will help massively in undertaking that task.

We have a huge pile of wood chips to spread, too, but I don't think we'll get it all done before fall. We have way too many projects and that one is not a high priority. We'll just use it as we need it and call it good. Embarassed

Post  No_Such_Reality 6/11/2016, 12:52 pm

Ugh, I've been drying my onions I picked earlier in the week out on my patio table in the shade of the tree.  This morning I get up and the June gloom is June mist/rain.

Nothing shows up on radar and nothing will show up in the rain gauge, but it's been enough that the payment is all wet, the gutters are going drip drip drip and of course, soak the outer layers of my previously nicely drying onions.

I'll take every drip of mist though.

I hope you can save the onions. It was cloudy here yesterday and so far today. Good days to work outside. No forecast of rain (10% tomorrow is hardly a forecast) but I will keep an eye out as you have mist.

Rain! We had rain last night! I didn't have the rain gauge set up so I don't know how much, maybe 0.1-0.2"? There was such a lightening and thunderstorm when I went to bed and then later I heard rain. What did I leave unprotected?? Anyone else get precipitation?

Rained significantly but I don't know how much.  The ground is wet this morning so it takes a bit for that to happen.  Thunder and Lightning through the night.  Fortunately, hubby put the tractor and golf cart under cover last night and picked up his tools that were out because of ongoing projects.

My local friend measured our rain at .11 inches.

That was my guess as the ground was uniformly wet around the yard and that's about what it takes to do that.

Windmere, Your photo reminds me of when I worked as a health inspector.  Could always locate the leach field but the lush growth!  As long as the soil is dry at the top, it's still working.  When it's wet, it's exhausted, or lost its depth of soil coverage, cracked, etc.

We're heading into the 100s next week, even up to 109*F!

Wait a minute.  Windmere's temp says 90*F and Sanderson's says 76*F.  Well Windmere's temp was as of 2.00 pm and Sanderson's was 11:00 am so maybe not so diff.  We just had a lot of thunder and wind and 10 drops of rain.  I think it is time for a nap and wait and see if we get any of the predicted 70% chance of rain.  Maybe I can get something done in the garden tonight except water if we do get the rain.  Gotta feed the wormies and give them some new bedding before I conk out.

The Fescue is dead; only some hardy weed grass left.  Yep, an "Ugly" photo.  We were late getting the sprinklers modified so we could auto water, so it's probably 90% our fault, as well as restrictions on watering.  I'm hoping to reseed Fescue in small areas at a time.  Photo from a better time, April 2015: California's Drought - Page 16 Garden10

Next fall/winter you might try a thin layer of wood chips (1 inch or so) to break down over the winter.  In BTE, Paul Gautschi's pasture is treated like this and is so thick with grasses that they have 50 sheep grazing and can't keep up with his growth.  He is in the northwest but in the rain shadow of the Cascades so they only get 16" a year.  Don't get out heat but it might be worth a try!

I thought fescue was for cool weather or a bit shady.  We had a very small patch of fescue planted in the front of the house so it would be green all year.  We just couldn't keep it from dying out.  We have a sprinkler system in that area and little restrictions on watering.  We had to reseed it every year and dethatch it and aeriate it to keep it growing in our heat.  Maybe you have enough shade to keep it going.  We finally gave up and I think we are going with Zoysia.
