Rabbit poop
I have a rabbit and I want to use his pellets for fertilizer. Any suggestions?

Kathy - here is a link to a discussion thread about rabbit manure. There are several, I just typed into the search box 'rabbit poo' and a big list of threads showed up. You have a great fertilizer making machine in that little guy!

Re: Rabbit poop
My grand father raised rabbits on a rather large scale and he was way ahead of his time in my opinion. His rabbit house was around 40 ft long with Rabbit cages lining both walls. Under the cages he had tin angled down to the middle to a gutter that angled slightly to one end of the building. The pellets would roll down the tin to the gutter and with a little help from a water hose would roll out the end of the building into containers. The manure would get dumped in a big pile and turned and composted some and used in his big ole fashioned garden. All the amazing produce trimmings from the garden would go to feeding the rabbits cutting the feed cost drastically. Trust me when I say his garden was amazing. Our son had a pet bunny and used the manure straight into his garden and reported an improvement as well.

Cappy, I hafta agree about your grandfather... VERY clever... and what a time-saver!
Gives me good ideas for if I ever can do something similar. Thanks!

Re: Rabbit poop
yea he really was a good home stead style farmer. His truck garden supplied most of the produce in the 2 local stores. His rabbits were another cash crop not to mention the chickens etc. he had a big smoke house too and made alot of smoked goodies including the rabbits smoked for gumbo. Lots of other things I remember from his small farm. This is what got me intrested in growing stuff as a kid.
Re: Rabbit poop
How nice of a set up he had and it sounds like he put everything to good use! Him supplying that much produce and smoked goodies is absolutely wonderful! He must have been a very busy man!

Re: Rabbit poop
He was a small town truck farmer and I only mentioned a small part of what he did for a living. his farm was on the bank of a Bayou so he also fished, trapped, etc. he had a black smith shop and I have several of his kitchen knives that we still use daily. He was a truely remarkable man.

Re: Rabbit poop
My one and only rabbit lives outside in a coop, most of the time. Very hot and very cold weather finds him in a cage inside. I use newspaper to line the pan and change daily. I throw it all in the compost area. Simple but it works.

Re: Rabbit poop
Giant trainer that is a great way to use the newspaper and rabbit poo! They will break down in your compost pile so well being together! When I had rabbits years ago, I didn't know about using their poo and I am sure I threw it away, if you can believe the travesty!
Cappy, years ago my husband and I went to New Orleans as a work-related trip. We got to go on a plantation tour, swamp tour and a tour of the city and cemetery. I got to hold an alligator on the swamp tour! I have very fond memories of New Orleans as I got to know some about the wonderful people and area and the diversity of life there. The food was so wonderful!

Re: Rabbit poop
I am so glad to hear that you guys did it right. The city has its problems like most do and since it is a city and a melting pot of sorts you really do not get the flavor of the true local culture till you venture out into the rural area. I live a mile or 2 from Oak Alley Plantation and even closer to Laura's Plantation the area is thankfully well off the beaten path giving us the advantage of rural life with close access to the advantage of the city. Best of both worlds.
