Quick and easy recipes from a working Mom
Our family is enjoying a large harvest of happy smurf tomatoes...(they are purple on the top and orange on the bottom and taste really sweet). They are awesome on their own, or in a kale salad with olive oil, lemon and sea salt (sun flower seeds optional), or with soft mozzarella, red onions, basil, olive oil and red wine vinagar. We are also eating baby bok choy, some kale, and other kinds of tomatoes these days. A family favorite is also a basil, parsley, oregano, and garlic or chive pesto that is made with olive oil and sea salt, and goes well with pasta and shrimps or chicken or whatever you have on hand.

Raspberries on my cereal! I built a 2 by 7 box last spring just for raspberries and they are actually producing already! One plant every square foot.

CC - how deep did you make the box. Is there a bottom or is it open to the soil below.

Raspberries!! I'm so jealous. One of the items we haven't been able to grow here. We have started a mulberry tree however, and we have Surinam cherries but nothing as good as raspberries. We have to get them from Costco. Fortunately, they now have organic.

We moved our raspberry bushes this year to a new location in the garden. They have not done well. As well they became infested with Japanese Beetles which made matters worse. We have seen a few berries this week but it is a very small crop.

The box is 6 inches high with 4 layers of cardboard under it, and filled with Mel's mix with extra compost. Once again, 6 inches seems to be all it takes. I also left lots of room around the box to mow down any escapees that will probably eventually show up.

Together with 50%-off lobster tails from Safeway, a sauce that includes home-grown dill and garlic; sauteed potatoes with garlic, onion, and parsley; salad, including frisee from the garden, as well as cucumber.
Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Broccoli leaves and melted soy cheese on gluten free toast. I may not be able to grow heads of broccoli but I can sure grow beautiful leaves!

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I just planted a dozen or more broccoli plants so I am thrilled to see ya nibbling on the leaves. Are they good steamed or sauteed?? If they good on a sammie they aughta be good in salad too. Having just put in our salad mix I see interesting possibilities

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Thanks Mark. All gone now.
Yes Cappy, you can cook the broccoli leaves up like spinach. I would use broccoli leaves in a salad in a heartbeat. They don't have to be chopped up as fine as kale and collards would.
Rosina, I just bought this bread at Trader Joe's this morning and I'm telling you it's excellent! It's their own brand and it's new to our store . I'm writing them an email now about how much I love it.

Unfortunately, we do not have a Trader Joe's here and never will since we are so small. Costco makes an attempt at GF bread but I don't care for it. I get wonderful GF bread from a local baker if I call ahead so no complaints but it looks as though TJ's has nailed it. So many choices now. Those who eat gluten free and drink beer be sure to check out Omission. The creator is celiac and it actually tastes good.

CC, looks great! I did not know you could eat the leaves either! Wish I was closer to a TJ's....love their stuff. Their frozen pizza (the 4 Frommagio) is the bomb!

Do you have "Down To Earth" on Kauai? I buy "Pamela's Bread Mix, Gluten Free, Non-Dairy" from them and make it in my bread machine, but it has directions for oven baking. It also freezes well. I slice it and separate the slices with waxed paper before putting it in the freezer. Then take out slices as I need them.

Thanks Nan. I no longer make bread. We still have two good bread machines. I eat so little it is not worth it and I'm getting lazier as I get older.
Used to be, when I ate wheat, I made lots and lots of bread. Grinding the wheat berries and everything. Times have changed and the rest of the folks just buy that Costco bread, which is a lot better than it used to be after a down turn when it was a lot worse.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Although this was just the first hint of fall weather It didn't take peg long to drag out her gumbo pot. The Gal makes a wicked good gluten free gumbo and loves to do it. It already contains okra assorted peppers from our garden onions from a friend, and I am sure green onion greens and parsley will also make an appearance .
