tomato surprise

Isn't it surprising when you tag your seedlings, transplant them carefully but something else grows instead?
I was waiting on Ukrainian purple paste tomatoes.  Instead I'm getting ribbed and bi-colored Hillybilly tomatoes.
 

How about loosing your first plantings to cold and going to the garden shop to buy two roma's and one san marzano to replace your lost paste tom's. Right now I have one san marzano and two roma'a and both roma's are round, medium sized and very dark red almost black and pretty bland tasting. Have no idea what they are. Definably not roma.

I've had surprise plants two years in a row from my local garden center. Last year, I bought a plant labeled Sungold and it turned out to be Blondkopfchen (little blonde girls). I was happy with the results, but then it happened this year with a plant that was labeled Black Krim and turned out to be something much bigger - not sure what it is. Tastes good, but I'll be planting my own seedlings going forward. 

Llama momma, I'll be taking extra care as I can see how easy it would be to lose track of tiny plants labels. Do you use little sticks? I'm going to do soil blocks, so I have my work cut out for me (pun intended).

I cut up plastic plant labels from gallon milk jugs over the winter.  Cut some here and there and before long I had hundreds of free labels.  Reusable too.

That's a great idea. I love repurposing old stuff so I don't have to buy new stuff.

I keep hearing how plant tags at stores get switched.  It's one thing if I accidentally switch my own seedling tags.  It's worse when you pay a higher price at the store and it's still messed up.  I've come to the point of calling ahead to find out when my nursery will have certain items then get over there pronto before tags get switched.

I like repurposing things too.  The milk jug idea was from someone else on this forum.  It works very well unless I get distracted and switch tags or tiny seeds jump around and land in surprising places.

I've got soil blocks. It's pretty cool to start the whole process from seed. The savings in seed expense keeps it worthwhile over the years.  I went from spending crazy amounts on seeds and store transplants to spending a fraction for some new seed.  Next years new adventure will be learning to save tomato seedlings now that I've experimented a bit with several varieties.

I had a plant switch this year also; bought what was labeled a sweet banana pepper which is really a jalapeno.
