Thirty years ago when we bought this house - there were no plants to attract hummingbirds and butterflies to the yard.  My job was then to plant attractors for both.  And later - plan and plant food gardens.

Feeding birds brought in seeds (in their feces) of different "unwanted" plants and in a couple of cases - surprising additions to the flower beds

My personal enemy #1 is a member of the milkweed family- honey milkweed.
Because Monarch butterflies don't appear here until mid-August (after the other milkweeds have bloomed), this vine "might" be a source of food for the larvae.  I have never seen a larva on this plant but then again....

My mistake has been leaving a few vines of honey milkweed to climb among some shrubs and set seed pods.  Now it is all over the houselot and a real pain.  "Big gun" herbicides are needed and they don't do complete job of eradication.

Enemy #2 - bindweed - think all of us in the US fight this demon.
http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/WEEDS/field_bindweed.html

Enemy #3 - English Ivy - been fighting this weed in the yard for 30 years. Previous house owners bought and encouraged this vine.

Thank heavens, I don't have kudzu, oriental bittersweet, or Japanese honeysuckle because these would cause additional "weed-pulling"
. . . . . . . . . . . .

Friend #1 - the cardinal climber vine, member of morning glory family, attracts hummingbirds.
Because it is an annual - the vine doesn't take over.

Friend #2 - Scarlet runner bean - new to me this year and I love it, the hummingbirds and bees love it as well.

Friend#3 - this morning glory "just appeared" a couple of years ago and I let it grow among the scarlet runner.  Unfortunately the seeds germinate WELL and extra plants must be pulled.

Friend#4 - Virgin's bower or Clematis virginiana - just a pretty vine and bees like it.
Had to buy plants to make certain they were this species. C. terniflora (autumn clematis) is more invasive and often sold in nurseries.

Friend#5 - white morning glory appeared one year and because it was pretty against the brick - trained it to grow up the side of the house -easy to control, just pull out the young seedlings.

Friend#6 - trumpet honeysuckle - hummingbirds love it.  It can be invasive.

Vines, I've come to love and hate - flowering ones Empty pics

Well, took some pics, both the white morning glory and the scarlet runners are between blooms.

Added a few pics of different areas of the gardens.  There are 6-4'x8' beds - originally set up for veggies, but somehow flowers moved in - LOL

Hoping that photobucket lets you see the pics.  If not please let me know.

Couldn't see it, if you were meaning us to see it right here. What I see is first an HTML command that starts off with text and ends up with a link.

What works for me (because it's my setup) might NOT work for others. I'll try again tomorrow.

Please see if the following link works, it "should" take you to my Photobucket album:
