With the limited amount of sun, and space in my patio area, selecting squares in one of my 3 4x4's was not easy. With much dismay, the selection of squash we purchased seeds for was quickly cut from the lineup.

Squash creates too much foliage, takes up too much space, and would require more training than time will afford me during this growing season.

Still wanting to plant some squash and needing planters for other items not going in the beds, I spotted tons of milk crates alongside a gas station we stopped at. "You know you are an SFG'er if...." you are looking for anything to drop some mel's mix into and plant in "square feet." Needless to say, I lined the crate with weed cloth (because I have a bunch of extra), zip tied it to the crate to keep it in place, punctured drainage holes into it, and loaded it with Mel's Mix. Then to Meijer garden center and found a fanning trellis. The bottom fit perfectly into the crate.

Now...the proof is in the pudding.

Anyone have success growing squash in crates with trellis'?

James, I must say, no I have never grown squash in a crate. Some members make 2 X 2 boxes for their bush type squash. However, the crate sounds good to me.

Regarding the trellis, is this a vining squash or a bush squash.

If it is a bush squash, we have threads where people secured the squash plant to a post, tied the squash with rounded jump rope (cause that would not choke the squash) and removed lower leaves as the fruit appeared causing the squash to be tall and only take one square foot of garden space.

I chose vining squash so I would not have to deal with all that, just go out every day or so and direct the squash vines up my trellis.

Let us know how it works.

James don't you just love milk crate I used them as feet for my T.T. my bros great idea. Two high turned out to be ideal for me. I grow bush patty pans in planters and they are doing great so far had my first little harvest last week. I do not support or train them at all just remove any damaged leaves and let them do their thing. The SVB & squash bug battle has begun Evil or Very Mad , wish me luck.

I've got squash going in 2.5 gallon rope buckets from Dollar Tree this year. They were doing great until the aforementioned SVB. One still going and the others replanted.
