We have only had a few gardens ever and this year we went the SFG route. Love it so far. What type of lettuce is this? Img_3711 This is supposed to be head lettuce. Doesn't look like it to me. Any ideas on what kind it is and what we should do with it? Thanks!

Could be head lettuce, but one that is responding to stress and starting to bolt.  The tall center stalk is an indication.  Have you had recent hot weather?  that can cause lettuce to bolt.  Nonna

It is supposed to be head lettuce. We have never done lettuce before so I didn't know what was going on. It stays hot here. I am in deep east texas. 80* at night and 95* during the day. What do we do with it?

Looks like a green version of rogue d'hiver or something like that, sold at Territorial seeds and one of our local nurseries. I've got a bunch of those, but the rogue refers to red, I guess.

Jeremy, Most lettuce are usually cool weather crops. However, as FG wrote, if it's not bitter, then eat it. Then plant more in the cooler fall. I just noticed you are in Lufkin. My husband's oldest son and family live there. My husband just got back from a 5 day visit this 4th of July.

Your garden looks nice and healthy. I'm glad you hung in there. It only gets better with time and experience. Can you post a photo of the whole box/boxes?

We have only done a few gardens ever and this year we went the SFG route. Very impressed so far. We planted some things we have never done before and we realized we planted them way too late. The lettuce was new to us. My kids wanted to plant it so we did not know what the outcome would be.

Sanderson: Small world! I hope he had a good visit. The weather was very cool for this time of year. Here are a couple of picks from our garden.

Er, rouge, that is. And at Botanical Interests, not Territorial.

It's classified as a romaine, so that might be where you want to start a search for fresh seeds.

What type? could be any number of varieties. Whatever kind it is, it's an immature plant  that is bolting from the summer heat. I have a volunteer romaine lettuce that's just now bolting (way out of season) There have been several 90-100 degree heat waves from late spring to now, so I'm going to let it go to seed and try to get my own strain of heat tolerant romaine. I hope it works because it was a 12" tall plant with abundant foliage, and was growing without water on barren soil!

Interesting possibility. Keep us posted over the months.

Same here. We've had weeks of high 90's and 100 degree weather, and the rouge d'hiver only bolted a couple of days ago. However, it HAS gone bitter ... but it IS less bitter in the morning. It was also very good through our cold spring that had a surprise 95 degree day early on.
