My pea mess
I think my peas might be growing out of control. Here's a picture, I have half along a nylon trellis and half growing up long twigs.
But I'm afraid they are too thick. I planted them 2 inches apart like it said on the packet, but many of the vines can't find their way up. Some are laying on the ground and all of them are throwing tendrils around each other. The leaves on the bottoms are started to die and I don't know if I should be worried about that either. Should I try to remove the plants that aren't climbing well or thin out in general? I am starting to see some flowers so I guess I'll have some plants that will produce.
Thanks!

Re: My pea mess
Nice peas! They look fine to me. This is the reason I put my peas on jute twine trellis so when the plants are exhausted & it's time to clear the area, I just cut the twine and compost the whole mess.
Re: My pea mess
Should I pick off the dead leaves or leave them alone?

Generally they will take care of themselves. I wouldn't give it another thought. How exciting you have blossoms! soon you will be eating fresh peas!!! Woo Hoo!
Re: My pea mess

Thanks for the info. Luckily I only pulled out 3 or 4 vines earlier today. Next time I'll ask first!

Re: My pea mess
Wonderful looking peas! Not a thing wrong with them that I can see.
I hope you didn't throw them away! The top 3 - 4" of pea vines make great eating. I just sautee them in a bit of butter. Yummy!

I didn't know you could eat the vines. Will they still make peas if I clip a few tops?

Re: My pea mess
every flower on a pea plant is hoping to grow up to be a pea pod someday.
And peas love to snuggle, so as stated above, no problem with the density.

Re: My pea mess
I just read an article about peas that don't need trellised because they cling to each other. You just plant a big block and they support each other as they grow. I bought a packet to try. I agree with everyone's posts so far. Nothing wrong with them, and my bottom leaves often die too. If they flower they grow fruit. Happy you didn't get too many out.
