May Need to Make a Return
I probably shouldn't have gotten this "Plastic" trellising -- I knew the price was too good to be true... Should I return this and get Nylon trellising?!

You can make your own trellis netting with sisal twine.

It will probably work. Test it and let us know. I use a plastic netting on some of my trellises.

I dont see why it wouldnt work, but might be a pain to get to your veggies. How big are the openings?

+1
The trellises that I've used were nylon or some other synthetic material, and the squares were 6-7 inches. That seems to be a good size for squashes, tomatoes, and beans. (All that I've tried.)
Re: May Need to Make a Return
The squares are 6 inches... I'm just wondering why Mel chose Nylon over Plastic. Is Plastic too abrasive? Is Plastic not as strong/can't hold the weight of heavy veggies like Squash/Eggplant as well? Does Plastic dry-rot quicker overtime/have a shorter life? And for any of these reasons, should I return the Plastic and get Nylon?

Re: May Need to Make a Return
A lot of us agree that gardening is one big life-long experiment, and just because something works to my satisfaction, it doesn't necessarily mean that it will be the perfect solution for you. Heck, after six years of SFGing, I'm still retro-fitting my boxes as I come up with ideas that might be an improvement.
Some of us use galvanized cattle panels for trellises, and some of us use rusty concrete re-inforcing wire for trellises. I can't imagine that plastic trellis would be more abrasive than those.
Barring any definitive 'absolutely not' responses to your question, just try it and see how it works. Then next year, you'll be the one with some experience to share.
(Personally, I would use it just because I hate returning stuff!)

Re: May Need to Make a Return
I have plastic on a trellis and the only problem I have with it is when I accidentally cut thru it. It's black. The white nylon is easier for me to see... ...and not cut.

Re: May Need to Make a Return
I noticed a soft green colored trellis netting (not plastic) at one of the big box stores. I really like the more natural garden look but I can see me accidentally snipping it!
Re: May Need to Make a Return
Sig, I have one of those, and the green dye faded away after a couple weeks in the weather, leaving me with an ugly beige. A white trellis looks better than the beige, even when it gets dirty.

Thanks for the product review! If I can snip a white one, imagine what I could do to a beige one! I had to patch the white trellis I snipped in Dec. Reminded me of a fisherman repairing his net.
Re: May Need to Make a Return
When you guys say that you've accidentally snipped parts of your trellis, was that in harvesting, or pruning leaves?... and if it was with pruning leaves, how do you know which ones to snip and which ones to leave on?

Re: May Need to Make a Return
After harvest. I snipped while I was removing all the tendrils and runners from the trellis.
Re: May Need to Make a Return
I usually try to keep my pruning shears away from my trellis net depending on what plants need tending. Typically I can pinch with my fingers the leaves and suckers when they are small.tumtumsback wrote:When you guys say that you've accidentally snipped parts of your trellis, was that in harvesting, or pruning leaves?... and if it was with pruning leaves, how do you know which ones to snip and which ones to leave on?
Look for a few older threads about pruning. There are some with great info and sometimes a video . As you get more experience, by being in the garden, you will gain confidence. But always, and I mean always, make double sure you are removing what you want.

Looking good tumtums. Do those boxes have bottoms. If they don't, the roots of that tree are going to love your fertilized mix. Ask me how I know.

Re: May Need to Make a Return
This is a different brand but the same kind of plastic netting I just put up, green with 6" openings. Couldn't find a nylon one in my small town. I agree it went up nicely; I stapled it to my wood trellis.
Hoping for the best for both of us!
