Mother Earth News
I just thought I'd pass this on. Mother Earth News, Feb/Mar 2014, has an article, with pics, about SFG. Page 41. I showed my hubby. He informed me it would be cost prohibitive.
I love the beds, so pretty, but they look to be 4 inch wide boards. So easy to sit on!

Can you get your hands on some cheap railroad ties? Those would be big enough to sit on! Keep your eyes open near new construction and reconstruction sites and also behind lumber yards. I have got a ton of my wood that way, one man's trash is another man's treasure!!

Re: Mother Earth News
Caution: Railroad ties should NOT be used in residential settings, much less for produce gardening.

Many years ago, it was popular to use them as retaining walls in gardening. Yep, I had them. Now we know not to use any treated wood, or old wood that was painted or stained prior to 1979.

Cedar fence pickets for boxes with 2" x 2" corner posts
Use 8 foot cedar pickets and have Home Depot or wherever you buy them, but them in half. This make 4' long boards x 6 inch depth. Use a 2" x 2", cut to three feet each, also, to drill your screws into, so you can double stack the boards if you want. Total cost = $20/4 x 4 box. Leaving extra length on the 2" x 2" boards on each corner, allows you to drape a frost cloth if needed in early spring, without it touching the plants. The cedar boards will last, smell wonderful and termites hate the smell of cedar. You can also make your beds the full 8' length of the boards if you want to.

Re: Mother Earth News
I'm not clear on what we are talking about here... are we talking about the height of the garden bed side?

Re: Mother Earth News
Littlejo, Any chance you can take a photo of page 41 that would show the beds? I don't subscribe to that Mag.
Fence pickets are SIX feet tall here
I built 6 beds last labor Day based on fence pickets. A fence picket is SIX feet tall around here, not 8 feet. So after cutting some in half, the beds are 6'x3'. On a slope, so 2 boards high in back and 3 in front. I used MM and then mulched HEAVILY with tree clippings for a BTE/SFG hybrid.
Those pics are on THIS site somewhere under BTE SFG. Not on my new computer.

I will try to get a photo of the beds. The website doesn't have that issue up yet, but will see.

Re: Mother Earth News
NICE! And oh so cost prohibitive, unless you found an old barn to take down.

I've never liked sitting on the thin boards of a normal raised bed. Those thick beds, and the rest of that garden, are a dreamy ideal.

Re: Mother Earth News
Can put a 2 x 4 on top, horizontally. This is a photo of what I mean. This wood box is for the zylosma tree in the neglected front yard, which is shaded and chilly at this time of the year. I can't wait until I have extra compost to amend the heavy soil. Yes, I painted the box to "look" like the rock facing on the front of the house.
