Yeah, square foot gardening could just as easily have embraced the idea of adding chemical fertilizers straight from the bottle, but it suggests supplementing with compost instead, which is much less likely to cause problems.
Unfortunately, excessive rainfall itself tends to increase soil acidity, so it's very common to add lime to the soil every year as a matter of course, whether it needs it or not. I'm not sure that's always such a good idea.

This is my third season in SFG. Aside from a very very low application of fish emulsion ( have no idea why I add it ) I havent added anything but compost to my beds. I don't check, nor do I care any more about PH...( SFG book says I don't ).
This season after my horrible episode with tree roots has been fantastic, and will continue into winter..
