growing romaine lettuces

hello everyone, trinigirl here. i've just started with sfg and i'm having trouble growing my romaine lettuces; not because of the sfg method,my lettuces just don't fill out. they all grow tall and thin. can anyone offer any suggestions on what i may be doing wrong? thanks.

When I looked up your temp just now it said it's about 85 at 6 PM. My guess is that it's just to hot for lettuce right now. Tomato, cucumbers, peppers, etc all love the heat. Are you growing those? If so, how are they doing?

Give them a nitrogen boost every 2 - 3 weeks... A light sprinkle of dried blood around the bed works pretty well.

I grow Romaine lettuce in both the spring and fall and it seems all the varieties I plant work best when individual leaves are harvested as no "head" really develops like one can find heads of Romaine in the grocery store.

Not sure if this is the cause of your problem but according to this link: Lettuce Growing Problems: Troubleshooting

"Romaine lettuce does not form heart. Seed was planted too deep; place seed on seedbed and cover with ½ inch of soil."

I agree on the temperature issue. Lettuce will bolt very quickly in that heat which could explain the tall spindly stalks. Leaf lettuce will grow in the Philippines under the same tempeature issues, but it has to be grown under shade cloth and needs extra water during the dry season.
