Being a bit of a renegade I planted two different 2' x 8' beds with squash and zucchini.
I put 8 seeds in each and they all sprouted and are happy plants.
We are pulling about 3-4 squash/zucch's daily - which is fine for my family of three.

We love the stuff and just had to give it a try despite the spacing suggestions.
So far - so good!
Happy plants and happy family snarfing them down!

Don't be afraid to experiment.
We did devote these two beds to just squash/zucch though - one bed of yellow squash, one with just zucch.

I'm happy to be SFG'ing after about six years with no garden!

Congrats Tracy! I gave up trying to grow squash.

1 plant per every 2 square feet, just like the book says! Great to hear that it is working for you. I am growing squash for the first time and am excited watching how monstrous the plant is growing. cheers

Last yr I planted butternut squash for the 1st time and only got 2 out of 4-5 plants, not good.
My zucchini has always do very well wherever I plant it.

Evidently I posted too soon!  My squash and zucch were churning away and all of a sudden about two days ago the zucch plants all look like they've been disturbed from the root and up by something - a critter methinks.  The main stalk part coming out of the ground looks 'chewed' or....something.

I have never had this happen.  At our other house we used to live in, we never did squash/zucch in the SFG.  Our Doberman had dug a spot for some reason right by the house - so we threw some squash/zucch seeds in there and had a GREAT harvest!  And that was just "dirt" and very full sun.

I'm not sure if I have a mole or some other critter...or something else.
I have pics on my phone - I'll try to download them and post them tomorrow.

The zucch's all look like they've been 'blown over' by a storm or something....weird.

I'm not sure if the zucch's will be a total loss or not yet...jury still out.
We have had a bit more rain than usual....not sure if that matters.
This time last year we'd been at 100++ degrees for over 10 days or so...this year has been fairly wet and cooler too (more like normal for middle TN).

I'll try to get the pics tomorrow.
