What do you stick in any free space? Empty What do you stick in any free space?

I've noticed that my love of chard has meant that if I have any part of a square that is "free", I will find a way to stick chard in it. It doesn't matter where it is in the garden.

I'm curious what other people will stick into any free space that isn't planned in their SFG. :?:

Garlic. Those I have been putting in corners of used spaces since they don't take up any room. And carrots and beets. I have become a huge fan of borscht this year.

This year it was bush beans. The first three plantings did not come up very well, so whenever a square freed up I planted them there. I do think it was the type of bean (La France, a filet/haricots type bean from Burpee) that was the problem, because they didn't come up well in any square! Mid-summer I switched to Dragon's Tongue beans -- totally different flavor, but we loved them (sauteed in olive oil with shallots and garlic).

Next summer, I'll try a different filet bean and more Dragon's Tongue.

That made me laugh! I hope I can get to where my "plan" is tight enough to not have free spaces.

I would say------carrots and turnip greens-----depending on the time of season.
We eat lots of carrots and I don't mind the bitter flavors. We have sugar.

I'm with chocolatepop. I tend to plant things around other things.

For example, when the broccoli was very small, there was a ton of space left in that square to plant radishes around it.

I don't actually have much FREE space but like Blackrose, I put green onions, radishes and lettuce in lots of places where I know they will be harvested by the time the plants next to them will need the space.

too funny ! now I have the giggles, sometimes things just hit you funny.
I agree , and you can never have too many squares!

But I would like to try and address MM's question, legit question ,hopefully legit answer, what I think is meant by free space is , well , you know usually when you plan a box you consider where to put everything according to maybe companion planting or depending on what or how much you want to plant of a certian type or family of a plant, then , also you have to consider the different times they mature and get harvested, so you may have squares that don't get used right away when you start or between harvest. So they may be free or extra that can be used for marigolds or something maybe smaller that needs to fit next to something bigger already established. This is just an example there is no hard and fast rule its your own call ! MM hope this helps and I didn't confuse you too much !

radishes and spinach

I used to fill-in with beets until one year I went 'DUH, I didn't know we liked beets so much' and started planting many more squares each year.

What do you stick in any free space? Empty Free spaces

Anything and everything, depending on the season and what seeds I have left.

This year I added carrots, radishes, a couple of extra tomato transplants, chard (none of which survived the rabbits), borage, bush beans, nasturtiums, and lettuce.
