pruning squash
Can anyone share pictures or a GOOD video of how to prune squash and zuchs? This is a picture of 2 golden egg squash plants. They are huge so far and are started to crowd their neighbors and my walkway. So many leaves! I know many people have grown squash vertically. I just don't know where to start. My first instinct would be to start wacking away at some of the leaves to trim up the area, but I don't want to mess them up. Also, after cutting off a leaf, you leave a hollow tube wide open with an invitation for pests to crawl inside. Advice?

Re: pruning squash
I don't know if my method is right or wrong, but I always trim at the base of the "tube" stem. I typically leave an inch or two, or three depending how far I can reach in. I pick out the worst looking leaves first and go from there.
I am my gardens worst enemy.

wow...your garden is amazing. so green and lush! What did you use in your compost in your mix? My garden is doing much better than last year(s), but it seems to be running out of "gas" and turning yellow. congrats on a beautiful garden!!

Re: pruning squash
Thanks! I used 2 types of bulk compost...a mushroom and a compost produced by the county. The other 3 types were bagged...a cow manure, a chicken manure, and a hummus product with added cow manure. I use fish emulsion every other week or so. Next year, I'm going to make sure to add earthworm castings.
