using aspirin on tomato plants to boost disease immunity
Does anyone do this? I've never heard of it, but I came across this video saying the salicylic acid in aspirin boosts hormones that help fight off disease.

Seems like there is some research that suggests this is true. Here's a link to a scientific journal article: http://www.znaturforsch.com/ac/v59c/s59c0856.pdf

I've got a gallon sprayer on my list of supplies for this year. Gary from the video, experiments and follows thru with lots of tips on garden veggies. I found him knowledgable in other things before.

Mel recommends this. Can't remember if it was in a book, in a newsletter or on his blog, but I saw it officially.
HMMM, I use a salicylic shampoo for my scalp psoriasis. Wonder if it can be used as the soap in my soapy insect spray. Could serve 2 purposes. What do you think?

Regarding your question about using psoriasis shampoo in the garden...
I think that adding things to the garden that are not made of compost is a game of Russian Roulette. After all, the garden doesn't have psoriasis, does it?

Re: using aspirin on tomato plants to boost disease immunity
Kay, I wouldn't use the psoriasis shampoo as a source of aspirin. There are other ingredients in that shampoo.
Re: using aspirin on tomato plants to boost disease immunity
It's in the Answer Book if someone wants to look it up and provide the pg # & recipe. I don't own the book but got it out of the library and did the baby aspirin in water after getting early, and later late, blight on my cherry tomatoes. I watered the base of the plants with the liquid and it kept the blight at bay. I had a fine season!walshevak wrote:Mel recommends this. Re: using aspirin on tomato plants to boost disease immunity
Mel B. may have it in the Answer book, but I don't own it either. Here are a few links if anyone is interested. I had Septora leaf blight last yr. and I think the last link has several homemade fungicides, which I think I will try them, couldn't hurt. Jo

From the Square Foot Gardening Answer Book:
"What should I do about small spots of fungus on my plants??"
Answer - "... on the odd chance your plants are affected, here's a homespun solution: water the plant once a week with a solution of one Bayer's children aspirin dissolved in a cup of water. Just make sure you water only the affected plant; this solution should not be used on healthy plants".
