Thanks to this forum - tomato seedlings on the mend
I have 24 tomato seedlings of a few varieties. The beefsteak and Roma were doing great,I up-potted them into mel's mix buried deeper. They shot up again to about 6". All seemed well. But they started curling and turning colors even though not really dry. Thanks to this forum, I came to realize it was likely phosphorous and nitrogen deficiencies. The undersides of the leaves were dark reddish purple. The leaves were curling and yellowing badly on top.
I watered and fed last night with fish emulsion. Tonight the undersides are just barely pinkish and the tops are turning green again and uncurling.
I had wrongly thought the Mel's Mix (bought from Home Depot premixed) would be all they needed plus water. Apparently the tomato plants are such heavy feeders the bought mix was not enough after all. When buried deeper and they shot up, they must have quickly (about 10 days) used up most of those nutrients. Very glad I have this forum to search for ideas in.
