Hopefully this will give some of you some inspiration.
This year is my first year doing SFG. Originally, we were going to turn half the yard on the west side into a traditional row garden, but after a lot of research, and a little digging, we quickly learned that was not a great idea (too many rocks, not much good soil to work with, too much work), so I started researching alternatives and found the SFG book at our local library's annual book sale. After much reading and planning this winter, this is where we are today:

The Plan:

On the north side; so their shade won't be as impactful during the summer; did some major trimming in anticipation that the large maple will eventually have to come down. It's over 70' tall and fairly old. The other one might come down later too; I hate cutting down trees but hopefully can replace with some fruit trees.

Good find!!! Lucky you! I wonder why the library got rid of the 2nd one? Our library has a few additions and they all have holds waiting on them.

Btw, the photo of the kids is adorable!

Happy gardening!

Don't know why they got rid of either one of them; it is an 'upper class' library though, and the edges of the books were a little 'tattered', that's my best guess anyway. I paid $3.00 for the older one, and $5.00 for the newer one. I've decided that's the way I'll be buying my books from now on!

It is supposed to snow / sleet / freeze tonight. In May. In Kansas. For the first time, I believe, in over 20 years. Gotta love the Kansas weather.

Hillbilly garden covers on...let's hope they don't get too cold (or hot!). Feel bad for all the farmers with wheat; not sure how it takes a cold snap like this...man it looked good last weekend though!

Are you using bush type tomatoes? Next year I am going to try and train my vine tomatoes up a trellis... This year, since we switched garden types, we had made the tomato cages. So we are keeping them in those this time...

Well, I made the mistake of not researching the difference between determinate and indeterminate tomatoes and discovered that three of my four varieties (listed below) are determinate (bush which will ripen at closely the same time). Next year I plan on doing all indeterminate so that I can train them up a trellis. I'm going to try with these to an extent, but its' too late to change varieties as the ones I have in the "greenhouse" are ready to put out in the garden next week!

Rutgers Tomato - Determinate
Roma Tomato - Determinate
Chadwick Cherry Tomato - Determinate
Mr. Stripey Heirloom Tomato - Indeterminate

Everything looks very nice, you have worked so hard! I looked at your picture of your horse manure and was thinking, yay, nice pile. Then I saw your garage, brickwork on the corner and your juniper and it looks just like my garage, except my garage door is a used replacement that needs to be painted white, along with the aluminum trim.

Haha. That's funny. Do you know who your builder is? I'm guessing he must have escaped to Utah? I've got a few words I'd like to have with him. Our house was built in 1979. Some of the things they did...make me shake my head.

Maybe that's true that he escaped to Utah! Our house was built in 1982 and I think all the houses had some issue or another. They did not use flashing and our roof leaked when it would rain in a certain direction, almost from the day we bought it, when it was probably 7 years old. Others had sagging kitchen floors, not enough studs in side walls where when it was windy pictures would fly off the livingroom wall. I don't know who the builder was because we were the third owners.

Your covers are great and the size is perfect! It looks like you planned for every contingency!

Uncovered the beds yesterday, and to my surprise, I think a few of the peppers and tomatoes are going to make it!! Lost several peppers, but not as many as I had thought I would.

Worked yesterday a little bit; although, an upset stomach kept us from getting as much done as we had hoped. Today...planting out the rest of the peppers and tomatoes, some flowers (mostly zinnias and coneflowers) and 225 seeds of corn!

Notice anything different?

Nice looking set-up. We are just across the state line from you, so I am eager to see how your garden progresses. We are first timers this year, and we are renting our house, so our garden is a bit more modest. Hopefully we are finally in the clear weather-wise, because I can't wait for these plants to take off! Best of luck this summer.
