Just checked the newly turned pile and it's already back up to 135*F...and 40*F outside.  Didn't add anything.

Turned the second pile last night, and it's up to 135*F already.
First pile turned is hovering around 150*F.

Currently working on eight 4' x 4' x 2'deep beds to go on the ends of my long line of beds, that I'll use to do potatoes, fennel, celery, and maybe peanuts, alternating every-other-year, and in the winter, use for composting.  Also, adjusting some of my outer beds (the ones that line the fences that were used as pollinator beds this year), to be able to do more herbs, carrots, and other butterfly and bee friendly plants.  Gonna be a busy, productive winter!

Piles sound like they are cooking away.

Hope everyone is having a productive winter...

With this bitter cold we've had since November, the compost piles are officially frozen...solid.  Will have to find some manure to jump start them again when it starts to warm up.

In the meantime, have been busy planning the 2015 garden layout.  Already have several things started in the basement; including lots of milkweed (started from my own seeds from last year's plants), lavender, bee balm, cone flowers, mint, rosemary, peppers and tomatoes.  Things are progressing nicely.  Will add another shelf / light setup here in a few weeks; which will make three.  This will increase the number of 3" seed starting cells from 360 to 504.

Now for some pictures...

2015 Garden Layout (Microsoft Excel)
Each excel cell has a code where I can automatically calculate the number of each plant that I will need.

Some of my seed starts this year so far...

Love the seedlings!

I tried to read the plan but can not make it out.  Sure looks bright and cheerful as it is now. Laughing

Turan: Yeah, you won't be able to read it -- I had to take two screenshots off of Excel to get it into JPG format, which basically destroys all the little tiny details. If there were a way to attach an excel spreadsheet here, I'd do it.  Basically, everything along the outside edges are either pollinator plants or caterpillar host plants.  The long boxes (12 or 16' x 4') are my "SFG" boxes for vegetables.

Kansas Hillbilly Backyard Garden 2013 - Page 6 Empty June 2015 Update

Post  slimbolen99 6/23/2015, 9:18 am

Been a while since I've updated this.  Been extremely busy with school and the garden and various other projects...

Bind weed is going to kill me. That stuff is nasty here. But, I have a plan...

Kansas Hillbilly Backyard Garden 2013 - Page 6 Empty 2015 Front Yard Transformation

Post  slimbolen99 6/23/2015, 9:19 am

Finally got some "wood chips". Transformation of the front yard has begun. Front yard will be a "rain garden" with native plants and some fruit trees / bushes (apple, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, grapes). Backyard will be mostly vegetables and some peach and pear trees.
Cardboard underlay capped by 8-12" of wood chips. Might make a second layer of wood chips, depends on how much they compress this summer. It'll probably take two more piles (about 8 yards each) to do the side yard and the back vegetable garden area. Time to go scout some native plants to save seed and plant this fall!

Bind weed? morning glory? How do you tell them apart?

Can't beat fruit trees! I wish more people would plant them, so I could eat from their trees! They can take a lot of spraying, though, so look for disease and/or insect-resistant strains. It could mean the difference between getting a crop and not getting one, or between spraying huge amounts of questionable and sometimes expensive chemicals right next to your house and undoubtedly on your skin in the process, or not.

I'll be interested to see how your front yard develops. You're doing it the way I would do it if I could.

I'll try and get some pics to show ya. Bind weed generally is more difficult (at least for me) to eradicate. The stuff has roots that can go down several feet.

One thing keeps coming back to me about your post.  How can you be a Kansas Hillbilly, when Kansas is a 400-mile wide pancake?  The only hills there are the artificially made ones for I-70 to cross over roads.

When we used to drive from Colorado to Tennessee, the truck drivers called it, "Miles and miles of miles and miles."

Kansas is plenty hilly. Just not western Kansas. It's also pretty scenic.
