okay for vertical support to lean against wall? Empty okay for vertical support to lean against wall?

Post  whompy 4/2/2013, 3:51 pm

I was planning on following the directions for building the vertical support from Mel's book (pound rebar into ground, fit conduit over it, etc.) for my first SFG. My SFG will be 5 X 2 so I can grow watermelon, squash, and cucumbers on it. If they do well, then I know the weight of the fruit will get quite heavy, and I was a little concerned about the support falling over.

Because of space issues in my yard, my SFG will be relatively close to the side of my house. So I thought, instead of having the vertical support be 90 degrees like in the book, and risk it falling over, why not intentionally lean it against the house? That way, there's no way if could fall over. It would probably be leaning at approximately 70-75 degrees against the house.

Those of you with more experience with this sort of thing- is this a bad idea? Are bad things going to happen to my garden if I try this?

Thanks for your help and advice!

I don't see any problems with your house or your garden by leaning the vertical support lean against your house. The problem might be harvesting something in the back middle of your 5x2 bed that is now growing up and away from you. If you will have room to walk between the SFG and your house then this would not be a problem otherwise you will be leaning over pretty far to reach the plants.
