When to apply neem oil? Empty When to apply neem oil?

Post  Windmere Thu Mar 28, 2013 1:16 pm

Hello all,

Well, this weekend my family and I will probably prepare our soil and beds. We plan on putting out most of our seedlings. Weather looks like it might be OK for middle Georgia. Am going to risk it.

My main reason for posting: When do you all apply neem oil? I am going to follow a recipe using peppermint liquid soap.

Link to organic pesticides here:

http://www.globalhealingcenter.com/natural-health/organic-pesticides/

Should neem oil be used as a preventative? At what stage of plant growth should it be applied? We most likely will use netting instead of tulle, so bugs will probably (no definitely in our area) be and issue for us.

Thanks all Smile

When to apply neem oil? Empty When to apply neem oil

My advice is to apply it only after your nose can no longer smell anything.

Seriously, when I used neem oil, I applied it the moment I had greenery that could be eaten. Of course, you should wait for a low-wind and rain-free period before applying it.

If you are using Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap, be advised that after they changed the base to hemp oil a few years back, the pressure sprayer produced soap bubbles with little liquid mist. I guess you will have the cleanest square foot garden in town if you spray with peppermint soap. I could use some on me after transplanting early this morning.

My observations over the years have boiled down thusly....

If you don't have a problem with insect don't treat.

Insects are required in the garden, not all of them are pests.

Regarding application of neem...

READ AND FOLLOW THE LABEL DIRECTIONS... be careful to not apply to flowering plants, because you need the pollinators in your garden.

When to apply neem oil? Empty The pitfalls of generic neem oil

Post  Windmere Thu Mar 28, 2013 2:30 pm

Thanks Hardcoir and camprn for your prompt answers to my question of the day.

Camprn, I'm afraid I bought a bottle of neem oil on Amazon that is not labeled in any way. It is certified organic, but its source is directly from India. My only frame of reference for use of neem oil is from the information I have from the Global Healing Center article (the link I earlier posted).

Hardcoir, I got a chuckle about my garden being "cleanest square foot garden in town." I am actually just going to use a spray bottle for application. I am hoping for the best.

thanks

Maybe you can find the required information at the first link here.

Please be cautious, it is considered poison, though natural.
