This is my first year for SFG. We love zucchini, but most varieties I've seen have really big leaved plants. Is it possible for me to grow a zucchini plant in my new garden, and if so, what varieties would be the best? Smile

Thanks for your help in advance

colleengallagher,
I have been growing black beauty bush zucchini for the past couple of yrs. Yes, you do need alot of room for zucchini and that is why I try to plant it in a corner square and let it grow over and onto the lawn. One plant will give you alot of zucchini. Very Happy

I grow zucchini in a 3x3 space. Last year I planted Dunja and it did very well. It was a little late in getting going but then produced fruit up to cold weather. It was a fairly compact plant and is resistant to mildew. I will plant it again this year. I also tucked in onions around the edges and some lettuce plants in the corners to make the most of the space.

Mounds are not necessary in SFG. I don't know if it's official, but what I do is direct sow 4 seeds in the center square of a 3x3 plot. I have had good luck doing that.

I love zucchini. I have grown them for 5 years now. I have planted 5 or 6 plants every year. I have gotten a total of 3 fruits in all that time. I keep hearing how prolific they are but not for me. My other veggies do very well but not my zukes....any suggestions?

You might need to hand pollinate them. If the bees or other insects aren't doing it, they may need some help. Zucchinis have both male and female flowers on them. The females are the ones with the baby zucchinis on them. Here is an amusing video on pollinating pumpkins and squash by John Kohler.

Graficow try planting near plants that do really well and are pollinated by bees. Maybe this would help.

I plant 1 Black Beauty each yr, and have planted a yellow zuke this yr. I planted a grey zucchini the first yr and did not care for the flavor and it didn't produce as well as the Bl. B.

Green Tiger has become my favorite. I've been growing it since Burpee first offered it:
