Hello - from Triangle area of North Carolina
Newby to SFG, this coming season. I have read the newest version of the book, and the Answer book, and I have also been reading some posts on this site (although not as much as I'd like - darn work getting in the way ).
I thought the hardest part of finding the materials would be finding the vermiculite, but I am finding it even more difficult to find enough different kinds of compost for my Mel's Mix. But, I'm hoping that as the gardening season gets closer, the selection will expand. And with more searching online, I'm hoping to find local resources.
I'm happy to be here, and hoping to learn lots from those of you who have experience.

Yes definitely as the season gets closer there are more varieties of compost to choose from. When I started my first SFG in Nov 2011 it was slim pickings for compost. Eventually, the big box stores started carrying different kinds. My best luck was an old time plant nursery. They had at least six kinds. Also the old time hardware stores that carry seed, sometimes vermiculite and compost. Good luck.

Hi Treefrog This is my first SFG year also. I was able to find 4 kinds of compost in Florida and I have my eyes out for a 5th kind. I think they will have more available as the main gardening season approaches for your area. I used the 4 that I could find and so far my plants are doing well with just those.

Howdy Treefrog, my first year too, but I was lucky way out West here. I was in your area back in the late 70's, we really liked Prince William Park. I was the man from MARS, I ran the Military Affiliate Radio Station up on Sugerloaf just past the stables. To hear the name Triangle VA brings back such pleasant memories. Have fun with your new garden. This here is one great bunch of folks who will help you all they can.

Welcome to the forum. I recently left the Triangle area to Charlotte area. I lived in Apex specifically. I can point you in the direction of some compost locally if you are south of the city or willing to drive.

Gilly, thanks - yes I am willing to drive (I am in North Raleigh, near RTP). But, for good "Black Gold", I'm more than willing to drive.
Can you PM me the details? I really appreciate it!

Jacksonville was where my ex was stationed. I was the only house in our little section of Midway Park to try to plant anything. Zinnias was the best I could do. 1961-1963
See if Dr. Campbell's Soil Amendment is available in your area. I can get it here in Wilmington. Pig poo.
