Having to start over at the beginning of August

Well, today is July 25. Due to an issue with underground pipes, my problematic side SFG is going to be decimated. It's narrow SFG, just shy of 2', but the front foot is about to have a rather deep trench dug through it to fix and replace a gas line the entire length of the bed.

The crew will do what they can, but I suspect the melons on the back half will have too much root disturbance to survive. The peppers and tomatoes in the front row are all goners.

So... Given that this weekend, or more likely, next weekend, i'll have a bed to replant, what's the August suggestions?

Sunlight will be a problem, since it's a side yard, as we head into fall it slower falls into greater shade from the house. I haven't quite marked out the demarcation in season when the sunlight becomes impractical.

Thoughts on my ability to get lucky with transplant peppers from the nursery? Skip them and go straight to a lettuce bed? Green beans we love and they grow quick. I should be able to squeeze a load of Bush type in.

Luckily my Collective Farm Woman melon and Canary melons are in containers. As are the Okinawan sweet potatoes. Which BTW, seem to be growing like weeds.

I have taken tomatoes late in the year and put them in 5 gallon buckets with a lot of success.
I am just planting spinach and peas in all my recently evacuated gardens.....
I wonder if you could put the pepper plants into buckets as well.

Save your Mel's Mix. Use buckets, rubbermaid bins, plastic bag, anything.

Where are you? How much growing season do you have left?

I managed to move some peppers from small pots to big buckets late last year. We were moving some into the greenhouse to try to overwinter. Success!!!!!

If your tomatos have some suckers growing but not pinched out yet, try cutting the tops back to that sucker and moving the plants into buckets.
Pick the green tomatos and ripen in the window. MM is so friable that you have to be careful it doesn't all fall off the roots, so use a large shovel to get as much root and MM as possible. Since you have to move the MM anyway, it is worth the risk to try to save the plants.

August is the lightest month of the year for planting in So Cal:
Beans, Bush
Beans, Pole
Beets
Carrots
Celery
Lima Beans
Squash, summer

If you can find a half grown tomato or pepper at a local nursery that might do also. A little early for springy things and a little late for summery things. But beets and carrots can be planted any month.

Yea, don't think it'll be ready til next weekend. It's a giant mess at the moment. Got on my irrigation shut off so I get to water all my containers by hand this next week.
