My spring garden is finished. Now it's time to start the fall gardening process.

I Planted 36 sets of tomato seeds about a week ago. It took about 3 days for the seeds to germinate. I planted three seeds in each "bay" of the outer section of a tri-fold plastic egg carton. Then I folded the middle section over it. This created an egg shaped green house. I had virtually no water evaporation doing it this way. I set them along the window sill above the kitchen sink (Facing west).

I used the method in TANSFG Book, using Vermiculite as the starting medium. I didn't "plant" the seeds, but simply dropped them on top.

Nearly every seed germinated, so I have about 100 seedlings. I planted 12 seeds of each variety in 4 "egg cells". I started 3 paste varietals, 3 cherry/grape varietals, and 3 beefsteak varietals. My problem is, I can get carried away real fast. Last year I discovered Tomato Fest, and bought about 15 packets of various seeds. This doesn't leave a lot of room for other plants and takes a ton of time, especially watering. This is why I created an irrigation grid. Anyway, more to come about fall crops.

Awesome Cincinnati! 100 seedlings Already Starting my Fall Crop 3170584802 Best of luck on your fall gardening. I actually planted the rest of my carrots this morning to hopefully be ready in the fall. I got several squares ready for kohlrabi that I'll start here pretty soon.

Ah, TomatoFest! happy dance Dangerous website for the tomato gardener! Dang $15 minimum order, and then they throw in a free pack of yet ANOTHER incredible variety that you have to somehow find room for! What's a gardener to do? who?me?

I currently have 18 tomato plants, and there are only 2 of us! And that was after I trimmed down the varieties to plant. I got some great ones from Quiltbea but between her and TomatoFest and my garden size, some of the varieties will just have to wait until next year.....

Hi from another Cincinnatian!

I'm going to ask a dumb newbie question--why tomatoes for a fall garden? By the time they are producing won't it be too cold for them, and shouldn't the tomatoes already planted still be producing?

I need to start thinking about my fall garden too, but first I'm having to replant a ton of squares, we had a little issue with a raccoon that ate almost 2/3 of my main bed before we finally managed to get rid of him Evil or Very Mad

congrats on you mater seedlings Cincinnati. sounds like you are going to be very busy real soon. But when do you start on your cole crops? Or do you grow those?

I started a batch of tomato plants last week too. I am currently working on sowing the cole crop and cool crop veggie seeds. It is a long list.
I am also sowing some bush roma green beans tomorrow. Already sowed some new cucumbers and squash.

Happy Gardening
