How deep does a bucket need to be.
I purchased a single cucumber plant for a dollar yesterday and am going to "try" and grow it in a container. How big and deep does the container need to be, to grow successfully? Will cucumbers climb just sticks, or do they also need something horizontally to attach to as well.

Deep enough to hold all the dirt you put in it.

I use 5 gallon buckets, make drainage holes in the bottom, fill the bottom 1/4 with rocks, put a little filler over the rock (I use compost) then top it all off with MM.

Have 3 growing in 3 1/2 gal buckets now and they are very happy. The buckets are self watering ones I made. They need lots of water in containers and a shot of compost tea/fertilizer every so often. They also need help with the climbing too. Mine are on my deck which is 10' off the ground. I trained it up and over the rail and on to a 5x7 semi-horizontal trellis. There are at least a half dozen side shoots and that many I pruned. 25 or so flowers on it and I found 3 little cucumbers this morning. At there current growth rate they will fill the trellis and then some.

3 cukes in A 5 GAL bucket filled about 3/4 with MM. Since this picture taken early June, I moved the bucket to the edge of a cattle panel and one plant is climbing for the arch.
