Choosing tomato plants
I looked at tomato plants this morning and could not determine which would be best for the sfg. I am only going to plant 3 and wanted a couple of varities.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

What are you looking for
You can grow the huge variety for using on hamburgers or you can do the smaller ones you find on salads. Or really go aff the wall and grow some bizarre one

Re: Choosing tomato plants
I just wanted to get something that doesn't spread out too much.
I am thinking about smaller tomatoes like roma and maybe a yellow tomato.

Re: Choosing tomato plants
When you do start narrowing your choices, remember to check whether determinate or indeterminate.. I made that mistake one time, boy were we disappointed when we got one huge batch of tasty Roma tomatoes and then no more....

Re: Choosing tomato plants
You probably already know this, but just in case, the size of the tomato has nothing to do with the size of the plant. I LOVE tomatoes and am growing 10 different kinds in my SFG this year. I've got the big ones - called beefsteak in these parts - these are the slicing kind great for sandwiches and burgers. I've got cherry varieties - the small ones that you see at the salad bar in most places. And I've got some that are mid-sized - think ping pong ball and golf ball.Nanbelle wrote:I just wanted to get something that doesn't spread out too much.

Determinate varieties are very bushy plants and can take up a 3'x3' section of your SFG. They set their fruit all at once then they stop - no more tomatoes. Indeterminate can get tall and skinny (if you pinch back the suckers) and will produce tomatoes non-stop until first frost. They can be planted 1 per square. All my tomatoes are indeterminate.
Any local nursery, Lowe's or Home Depot will carry a variety of sizes and will state on the label if they are determinate or indeterminate.
I can't recommend a roma but for yellow I like "yellow plumb" and "lemon boy".
Re: Choosing tomato plants
Ditto for Lemon Boy for a yellow. Also a favorite is yellow pear -- they are small one-bite pear shape and the sweetest tomato you will ever put in your mouth. They are also very prolific. Two of my favorite slicers are Better Boy and Big Boy -- both are hybrids which means they are resistant to disease. If you are minimizing space, then definitely go with an indeterminate (all the above listed are ind.). With just three tomatoes, I wouldn't suggest a Roma (paste tomato) as they are a bush and take up too much room for what you get. All tomatoes can be used for canning. You just might have to drain some of the juice off them.
